FAQs
Clinical Hypnotherapy
I'm afraid to go under hypnosis. I don't want to not know what's happening.
This is a very common misconception. In fact, you will know everything going on around you
during the whole session. While it is possible to doze off during a hypnosis session, you are
awake and in a heightened state of awareness. That means nothing can happen to you that
you don't know about. You will remember most or all of your session, and you won't say or
do anything you wouldn't otherwise say or do.
What happens in a hypnotherapy session?
For your first appointment, you and I will spend 30-45 minutes talking about what you want
to change in your life, work, relationships, family background, and other information that
will help me devise the best session for you. Then you will sit in a comfortable reclining
chair with a pair of headphones. I play pleasant background music and speak with you
through a microphone. The headphones helps negate any distracting outside noises, and I
have an easier time accessing your subconscious mind. I use a progressive relaxation
technique to induce hypnosis, then I will speak with you about your presenting issue by
giving you helpful, positive suggestions for your subconscious mind to begin processing.
Then I bring you out of hypnosis, and you are free to continue your day. It is a relaxing and
very pleasant experience. During subsequent appointments, we will spend about 15 minutes
talking about your thoughts and challenges before the hypnosis segment.
What if painful memories come up during hypnosis?
Sometimes memories from your past will come up. They are not necessarily hurtful or
harmful since nothing will happen under hypnosis that you wouldn't also remember while
going about your normal day. If you are not ready to deal with something from your past,
hypnosis will not change that. Our minds, first and foremost, want to protect us. What
hypnosis can do is provide understanding and perspective about a painful past event, but it
will not bring that event to light unless you want to deal with it. Note: Be sure to see an
ethical and well-trained hypnotherapist. The issues around repressed memories are
potentially hurtful and need to be handled with tact, integrity, and delicacy. Memory is a
faulty thing. Some things we remember aren't necessarily fact, and we don't remember
some things that are fact. Be careful you do not see a practitioner who leads you or
"suggests" that you may have certain memories.
Am I going to bark like a dog?
No -- not unless you really want to. You are fully aware during a hypnosis session. You sit in
your chair the whole time, and I sit in my chair across from you the whole time. You
absolutely will not do anything in hypnosis that you do not want to. You do not surrender
any control or free will.
What does it feel like afterwards?
Most people feel wonderfully relaxed and peaceful. The primary sense people have is that
they don't know how much time has passed. There tends to be about 15 minutes of
drowsiness when coming out of hypnosis, then people are refreshed and ready to continue
their day.
Is hypnotherapy better than counseling?
It is different. In general, many issues can be resolved in 3-6 hypnotherapy sessions, which
is a considerably different approach than traditional counseling. Hypnotherapy works with
the subconscious mind to move you forward, rather than focusing on the past. It is not,
however, a substitute for qualified mental health counseling if that is more appropriate. I
work with many mental health professionals and can happily refer clients to a counselor. I
do not diagnose or treat mental illness.
Guided Imagery
I'm scheduled for surgery and have heard that Guided Imagery helps speed recovery. Is
that something you can help me with?
Absolutely! You can come to my office for a personal guided imagery session, you can opt
for a pre-recorded CD, or I can record a custom-designed CD specific to your surgery for
pre-op and post-operative care.
I want to learn how to meditate. Do you teach classes?
Yes. There is a lot of information on the Internet about meditating, and some wonderful
books have been published as well. I do teach classes in meditation and offer individual
meditation sessions for those who seek some guidance. I also give all my clients lessons in
Self-Hypnosis, which is similar to meditating.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (this page is coming soon)
Can you recommend a good book on NLP? It seems fascinating.
Unfortunately, I have not found one I can really recommend. There are a lot of books out
there, but I haven't yet read one that was both informative and interesting to read without
becoming too academic. If anyone has any recommendations, please email me at
insightsolutions@earthlink.net.
Wellness Consulting
I'm not happy. There isn't really anything wrong in my life, I'm just not fulfilled. I don't know
where to start. Can you help me?
Yes. We can schedule a consultation to find out if I am the right practitioner for you or if
you also could benefit from the services of a licensed mental health professional. During our
consultation, we'll cover every area in your life including eating habits, sleep patterns,
relationships, family, work stresses, desires, dreams, goals, inner feelings, spirituality, and
relaxation. With that information, together we will devise a plan for you to help bring more
joy and peace into your life. You can either implement it on your own, or we will work
together on it using a combination of hypnotherapy, energy healing, or spiritual counseling
to increase your happiness and fulfillment.
Energy Healing
Do you see auras?
Often I do see energy fields. I can always feel them, whether I can see them or not. For
instance, I may not visually see red, but I can feel red in the energy field and work to
rebalance the various energies that surround the body.
What can I expect during an energy healing session?
Energy healing sessions are done either on a massage table or in a chair, depending on the
client's comfort. Also, energy work is always done over clothing. I will usually work a few
inches off the body, although in some circumstances, I may rest my hands lightly on your
shoulders or feet. It is gentle, relaxing, and clients usually feel a general sense of well-being
and worthiness for several days after the session. Daily life is a lot easier when our energy
fields are functioning optimally. In addition, I am happy to show clients exercises they can
do at home to keep themselves in balance.
Spiritual Counseling
I am interested in pursuing a spiritual path. Is this what you do? How?
Yes. Depending on whether or not I am the right partner for you, I am happy to help you
develop your own spiritual path. You and I will meet and discuss different aspects of your
life so that I can determine how best to help guide you. I will also ask a lot of questions
about your belief system so that I can optimally assist you on your spiritual journey. My
primary job is to ask you the most intuitive and compelling questions so that you can delve
deeply into your personal spirituality. Together we will explore your understanding of the
world and expound on that understanding exponentially. This is a deeply rewarding process
that fosters peace, joy, radiance, and connectedness both within and in the outside world
around you.
